Safety Guidelines
Please see below a guide for how to use our equipment safely. If hirers require a full Health and Safety Guide, they must consult a professional. Joey Board Hire Ltd will not be held responsible for the safety of hirers and hirers should consult our Hirer Terms and Conditions for further clarification, and always seek professional advice from an approved body before going on the water.
1. Wear Personal Flotation Devices PFD
We always recommend the use of a Personal Floatation Device PFD. We have provided 50 Newton buoyancy Aids for all hires. For weaker swimmers, it would be recommended to get a 100N jacket (not available from Joey Board Hire). We recommend that dogs also wear a floatation device.
2. Wear the Leash
In order to not get separated from your board, ALWAYS wear the leash around your lower leg. This not only keeps the board from floating away, but also offers a further floatation device to help hold onto when falling into the water.
3. Fast Flowing Waters, Tidal Rivers or Sea/Ocean Usage
We do not recommend using our boards on Fast Flowing Waters, Tidal Rivers or Sea / Ocean. The boards are designed to be used on calmer waters such as lakes, rivers and canals.
4. Wear Shoes
We recommend that users wear some form of show when using the board to protect their feet should they need to place their foot down on shallow water.
5. Always Supervise Young People
6. Follow any Local Rules and Advice
It is always advisable to check with the local sources of information on water safety before taking to the water.
7. Advise People on Land
Always tell someone land based about the trip you intend to take including location and timings, reporting when you are back safely.
8. Take a Mobile Phone
If possible, take a charged mobile phone in case of emergency.
9. Wear Adequate Clothing and Protect yourself from the Sun
Please see FAQ section for advice
10. Plan your Journey
Never paddle in the dark or in shipping lanes.
11. Paddle in Pairs
If you are paddling, we strongly recommend that you pair up with another paddler in order to support one another.
12. River Paddling
Stay on the correct side of the river (normally the right). Do not go through locks and use the 'Portage' areas and carry your boards around. Never try to go down a Weir and do not paddle in fast flowing water.
13. Weill's Disease
When paddling on inland waters there is a chance that there may be Weill's disease in the water. Please make sure you wash your hands with soap/antibacterial gel before eating and shower after, washing all clothes.
14. Inflated Board
Please make sure the board is inflated correctly as per guidelines.
15. Licensing
It is your responsibility to license the paddle board on whatever waterway you are paddling on.
